Short-Term/Seasonal Programs
  • Get Alarmed: Smoke detectors are being installed in homes of children and elderly and fire safety education is being provided through funding from the Virginia Department of Health.

  • Fall Prevention: The program provides fall prevention tips and assistive devices and equipment to help the elderly prevent falls and maintain maximum independence and safety in their home.  This program is made possible through funding from the Virginia Department of Health.

  • Farm Market Fresh for Seniors Program: Provides coupons to the elderly to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmer's markets and is made possible by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and the Virginia Department for the Aging.

  • Fan Care and Summer Cooling Program: FanCare is made possible by a $500 contribution from Appalachian Electric Power each year and allows AASC to provide fans to the elderly.

  • Smile Program (Seniors Maintaining Independent Living Environment): This program can provide a listing of private hire homemakers in the service area at your request.  Homemakers need to call to be placed on the list and those seeking to hire are responsible for checking references, negotiating pay rates, scheduling etc.

  • Emergency Services: Assistance in securing services or items to meet an immediate need to ensure safety and well being of older individuals.

  • VICAP (Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program): Staff help individuals apply and/or resolve issues with the following: Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Services Programs (QMB, SLMB, QI), Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage, Extra Help for Prescription Drug Coverage, Medicare Health Plans, Supplemental Insurance, Long Term Care Insurance, and other health insurance plans.

  • Disease Prevention/Health Promotion: Comprehensive health assessments and linkages to resources to promote safety and independence.

  • Telephone Reassurance: Scheduled calls to homebound or isolated individuals to check on their health and well being.

  • Medication Management: Assistance obtaining, understanding, and managing medications.
