What is an Ombudsman?
An ombudsman serves as an advocate (a supporter of rights) for older persons
who receive long-term care services at home, in the community, or in a long-term
care facility, such as a nursing home or assisted living facility. The
ombudsman helps protect and improve the quality of care and the quality of life
of long-term care residents.
If you are receiving long-term care
services, our Ombudsman can educate you about your rights. The cornerstone of the
ombudsman's mission is the concept of residents' rights. The goal is to
make sure you understand those rights and exercise your choices so that you
receive quality care.
When the Ombudsman receives a complaint made by or on behalf of an older person,
they investigate and attempt to resolve the concern. They also identify problems and concerns of older people who receive long-term care services and
recommends changes in the care system that would benefit this group.
