The ombudsman helps older adults have a voice in what happens to them, ensures their quality of care meets the standards set forth in state and federal laws and guidelines, and works with residents, families, and management to ensure that nursing home and assisted living facility residents are treated with dignity and respect.

As an advocate for the elderly, the ombudsman has many duties, including:

¨ Identifying, investigating, and resolving complaints for residents of long-term care facilities and recipients of community-based long-term care services;

¨ Providing information to public agencies regarding the problems of older people residing in long-term care facilities or receiving long-term care services;

¨ Promoting the development of citizens’ organizations to advocate for quality long-term care services in their communities;

¨ Compiling and analyzing data relating to complaints and conditions in long-term care facilities and concerning long-term care services;

¨ Identifying and working to resolve significant problems affecting large numbers of older people in long-term care facilities or receiving long-term care services; and

¨ Carrying out other activities which federal and state regulations deem appropriate, including providing long-term care information to the public.

The ombudsman is required to attend at least eight hours of training during the year, outside of any State Ombudsman sponsored training. Continuing education may include mediation or conflict resolution training, public benefits training, and seminars on relevant long-term care topics and issues
